*******************************************
In 1957 Swami Vishnu-devananda left his home, the Sivananda Ashram in Riskikesh, India, under the direction of his teacher Swami Sivananda Saraswati to spread the ancient teachings of Yoga.
In honor of his beloved master, Swami Vishnu established several Sivananda ashrams worldwide and developed a comprehensive, scholarly and yet practical Yoga teacher training program.
It is through the ancient Gurukula (guru=teacher; kula= home) system of India of studying, working and living with one’s teacher that the knowledge of Yoga was passed on to me.
My studies included not only intense asana practice (the Yogic exercises most people are familiar with), but also the philosophy, psychology and activities of Yoga including: Vedantic theory, the Raja Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, Bhakti (the Yoga of devotion and love), Karma Yoga (selfless service), Sanskrit (the sacred language of Yoga), Meditation, Mantra chanting, Kirtan singing, Pranayama and more.
I feel very honored and blessed to be a part of the Sivananda family and this Yogic lineage and living tradition. It still amazes me that a system of “simple living and high thinking” originating over 5,000 years ago could be so relevant, meaningful and applicable in today’s world.
With much respect and great humility, I share these gentle and inspiring teachings of peace, love and truth.
