Yoga is an ancient, rich science of self-development and self-exploration. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj meaning to yoke or bind, and is most often interpreted as “union”. While many are drawn to yoga as a way to keep fit, the intention of this ancient practice is to experience spiritual enlightenment and the integration of mind and body to create a deeper connection to one’s essential nature.

The physical postures known as asanas, are intended to purify the body physically and energetically. Hatha relates to the physical exercises. Ha means “sun” and tha means “moon”. Hatha then, refers to the masculine (active, hot, sun) and feminine (receptive, cool, moon) aspects of our nature. So Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. It helps us develop a balance of strength and flexibility together with effort and surrender in mind and body.

The physical postures move the whole body through its full range of motion and include weight bearing, freeing up the joints and strengthening and stretching muscles and soft tissue. Combined with breathing, relaxation techniques and meditation – the continued practice of yoga promotes strength, balance and flexibility in the body and overall well-being.

According to the Mayo Clinic, yoga can also be an effective method to reduce stress and anxiety. Other health benefits of a regular yoga practice include:

* Lower blood pressure

* Improved circulation

* Relief from low back issues

* Greater flexibility and range of motion

* Relief from arthritis symptons

* Improved balance

* Improved breathing

* Cross training and injury prevention

Yoga incorporates a broad range of practices and techniques which can be adapted to meet the specific needs of any individual. We offer a complete range of classes and workshops for all levels along with private instruction. In addition, classes can be brought to you either as a series or one off seminars.
